Soul Matters Discussion on Joy

“The high value put upon every minute of time, the idea of hurry-hurry as the most important objective of living, is unquestionably the most dangerous enemy of joy… I would simply like to reclaim an old and, alas, quite unfashionable private formula: Moderate enjoyment is double enjoyment. And: Do not overlook the little joys!… a tree, or at least a considerable section of sky, is to be seen anywhere. It does not even have to be blue sky; in some way or another, the light of the sun always makes itself felt. Accustom yourself every morning to look for a moment at the sky and suddenly you will be aware … Continue reading Soul Matters Discussion on Joy

Resistance and Resilience for the Earth

One of the core values of Unitarian -Universalist is to embrace and acknowledge our Interdependence; We honor the interdependent web of all existence. We covenant to cherish Earth and all beings by creating and nurturing relationships of care and respect. With humility and reverence, we acknowledge our place in the great web of life, and we work to repair harm and damaged relationships. Ecosystems may be both resistant to and resilient in the face of change due to a complex interplay of factors. Resistance refers to an ecosystem’s ability to withstand disturbances, while resilience refers to its ability to recover and adapt after a disturbance. We will explore ways that, … Continue reading Resistance and Resilience for the Earth

The Philosophical History of UU

How did the Unitarian Universalist Church/Faith become the pluralistic faith it is today? How did we become less oriented towards God and Christianity and more oriented towards social and environmental justice thought and action? Why is the flaming chalice the symbol that has come to represent our faith tradition? This has been a centuries long evolution. On Sunday we will hear about this tradition and reflect on why this is meaningful to us today. Meet in person at CVUU or online through Zoom on Sunday at 10:00 AM.

The Landscape We Inhabit with Dr Rob Davies

On April 6, we are honored to welcome Dr. Rob Davies, who will lead our service with wisdom and insight. Don’t miss this opportunity to reflect, connect, and grow together! As we move into a future that is increasingly disrupted, both ecologically and socially, some people prepare their “bugout” bags and their cabins stocked with ammo and dry goods. History has not been kind to this ‘prepper’ mindset. Someone always comes along with bigger guns and more ammo to take it away. And in addition to the futility, frankly speaking, what a terrible way to live. But there is a kernel of wisdom here: preparation. What the prepper mindset misses… … Continue reading The Landscape We Inhabit with Dr Rob Davies

Solitude, Lonliness (and Potluck!)

Jo Leary will help us explore Solitude and Loneliness and the differences between them. There will be a short video followed by discussion (and food!) There are certainly benefits to being alone. How many epiphanies happen as you spend time alone in the bathroom or the shower? And on the other extreme, how many times have we felt the pangs of loneliness when we were actually with people, but not feeling connected to them? We hope that, through shared experience, we will feel the interconnectedness of our community and be able to support each other in our quest for truth and meaning. Jim Evans will also tell us about Faithify … Continue reading Solitude, Lonliness (and Potluck!)
