As we move into a future that is increasingly disrupted, both ecologically and socially, some people prepare their “bugout” bags and their cabins stocked with ammo and dry goods. History has not been kind to this ‘prepper’ mindset. Someone always comes along with bigger guns and more ammo to take it away. And in addition to the futility, frankly speaking, what a terrible way to live.

But there is a kernel of wisdom here: preparation. What the prepper mindset misses… is community. Our true challenge, and an authentic source of resilience and security, lies not in our personal bunkers, but in community. Let’s call it “social prepping.” The bad news is, we’re behind. But there is also good news, and it’s this: we live in a place, here in Cache Valley, that has all the element necessary for robust social prepping for the disrupted landscape that is fast growing large in the windshield.
