Restorative & Transformative Justice: a Path Towards Prison Abolition

Under our modern criminal justice system, when harm is caused, we ask, “What laws have been broken? Who did it? And what do they deserve?” This retributive justice approach has produced the carceral state we live in, which today denies freedom to millions of people in the United States. We will consider the shortfalls of this system and some alternative ways to address harm: restorative justice, which asks, “Who has been harmed? What are their needs? And whose obligations are these?”, and transformative justice, which asks, “What is the context of the harmful behavior? How is it structurally similar to other incidents?
